Disappointed by Nars?

I have to confess NARS it a brand I haven’t ever gotten to get to grips with. I think it’s the glitter. I know they have plenty of non glittery products but every time I see a shadow or a blush shade I fancy it comes with chunks of glitter or heavy shimmer. Mekong eyeshadow disappoints me for a different reason though. Isn’t it just gorgeous in the pan?

It’s a rich coffee brown with bronze shimmers through it. It looks lovely in the swatch too. Just as pigmented and rich as it should be.

But see that grey in my crease?

Yeah, that’s Mekong. For some reason it doesn’t matter how I apply it, what primer I use, what sticky base. As soon as I apply brush to shadow Mekong disappears and I’m left with a cool grey. It’s a magic colour changing eyeshadow... and I don’t like it.

So I’m asking you my lovelies to give me some suggestions of Nars products that really do live up to the hype. All I have is the Only You Cheek & Eye palette in which I love the other 3 shadows, like (don’t love) Orgasm blush and dislike Honey Lust highlighter. Thoughts? X

  1. I really like Nepal. It's a great everyday shadow. And the new Lhasa one is great too. But those would be the only two I use and really love. Oh, and the Habanera Duo is lovely as well. BUt I agree, NARS shadows are kind of meh.

    1. It's funny Tracy as so many people adore Nars. Maybe I haven't tried the right products yet? x

  3. Hmmm it's really strange that it comes out grey! I love NARS, they're very high up there in my list of favourite brands but I feel you on the eyeshadows. At times their eyeshadows can be duds.

  4. I know what you mean - some things can be hit & miss! My favourites are: Nepal eyeshadow (if you like MAC's all that glitters, you will love it !) Turkish Delight and Striptease lip glosses, Chelsea Girls lip lacquer and Miss Liberty highlighting blush powder. Phew! :) x

  5. I haven't tried enough from Nars to give any recommendations!! It's such a shame about this eyeshadow, it looks so beautiful in the pan xxx

  6. Hi Claire, That is so disappointing. I haven't got Mekongbut love the look of it (in the pan). Try using it over Chanel Illusoire? Or over a shimmery Paint Pot?

    1. Sadly I don't have Illusoire (yet... it's on my wishlist) or a MAC Paint Pot. I've tried it over Benefit Creaseless Cream shadows and other random cream shadows and it still goes all weird on me :-( x

    2. Hi again Claire,
You could try it over Nars Ponderosa. Or anything similar with a shimmer in it. I'm going to try out Mekong next time I'm at Nars and see if it goes all grey on me.

    3. Claire, I managed to test out Mekong today at Libertys and it looks so truly gorgeous in the pan.
Swatches so nicely on the hand and put some on my eyes in the socket. It came out brown but lacked the sparkle in the hand swatch. It seems when it is blended it loses the glitter sadly and you are left with a matte.
Maybe this stuff is best patted on and not moved around once applied. I did notice when the sparkle went away with a small bit of blending that it did have a dull tinge like you said - a cool ashy brown I should say.
I'd say it's not a shadow for the crease but one for the eyelid with loads of shimmer cream base underneath. Packed on in dabs.

    4. I'm inclined to agree with you, gorgeous shade but not one for blending at all. It is so pretty in the pan though isn't it! x

  7. I haven't tried loads of NARS, but from what I have tried I find it a pretty over-rated brand. I have tried about half a dozen eyeshadows and most of them were glitter bombs (though I do love Ondine), and their blushes didn't impress me. The lip glosses stink and are really sticky. I do have an eyebrow pencil I quite like, but it's not like it's the business or anything - it's just an eyebrow pencil.

And I HATE the packaging - it just gets so grotty.

    1. The packaging of this palette is a kind of neopreme (sp?) type material which is fine (although not especially glam...). The normal rubbery packaging would probably do my head in. Not sold on Nars at all at the moment! x
