December Empties (+ 2012 empties round up!)

I cannot believe that 2012 is almost over. I feel like I blinked and missed it! My fascination with empties posts/ videos continues so if you have posted any please feel free to leave a link in the comments. In December I finally finished some more makeup products which was a bonus!

Dior Forever Extreme Wear Flawless makeup. I really loved this foundation but sadly it has been discontinued. It wore well (not forever but it lasted well through work), had good coverage and a soft matte finish.

The L’Oreal Studio Secrets Smoothing primer was nice enough. I disliked the pot though and I also felt like I had to tug at my skin a little when smoothing it on which I disliked. I won’t repurchase as I have so many others I want to try and this was just ok to me.

The ELF Clear Wet Gloss Mascara has been a brow staple of mine for a long time and I used up 4 tubes of it in 2012! I have since moved on though and prefer my MAC Brow Fix so I won’t be buying this anymore!

The mini MAX Factor Kohl pencil was just ok. It didn’t last particularly well on my water line so I tended to keep this pencil in my hand bag for touch ups. I wouldn’t bother buying it again, there are better pencil liners out there.

And some perfume empties! That bottle of Ralph Lauren Romance has been in my life for more years than I care to admit. I thought I’d lost it ages ago then pulled out a handbag that I hadn’t used to a couple of years and there is was. I adored this as a teenager (yes... it is that old) but having spent so long trying to use it up recently I’m bored of it now. It is a nice, soft wearable floral though. The wee sample bottle of Guerlain Shalimar Parfum Initial L’eau is a lovely fragrance. It is much more appealing to me than the original Shalimar which I found almost too soapy.

It’s been a bumper month for skincare empties!

The Dove hand cream is nice and inexpensive, I have repurchased. The Crème Brule Vaseline tub was distinctly meh. The fragrance was so so and as a lip balm I didn’t find it particularly moisturising. The Neutrogena Daily Defence Moisturiser, Simple Kind To Skin Eye Cream and Nivea makeup remover wipes  were all just ok. I didn’t dislike them but I didn’t like them enough to run out and repurchase.

I finally caved and am throwing the awful Glossy Box lipstick. I hate that they are using the box to pimp their own shoddy makeup line (at least what I've tried of their products has not impressed me!). It was partly this that made me cancel my subscription. The Neals Yard black pencil liner is so awful that it has to go. It has no pigmentation ans it so hard it hurts my eyes, I got it free with a magazine so I have no guilt about throwing it.

In Summary:

A quick count through my empties posts reveals that I have finish a total of 32 makeup items in 2012 (I have not included items thrown because they expired or were rubbish). I dread to think how many I have purchased in comparison. The breakdown is as follow...

6 tubes of mascara (of which 3 were sample size)
3 foundations
5 powders
3 concealers
6 lip products (5 gloss, 1 lipstick)
3 face primers
5 clear brow mascaras
1 eyeliner pencil

In addition I finished 9 perfume samples and 1 full sized bottle.

I feel like I want to improve on that score in 2013. If nothing else I will start running out of storage space soon! When was the last time you finished a makeup item and what was it? I’m nosy and I want to know! I hope you all have a fabulous New Year and please stay safe out there tonight xxx

  1. That's an impressive amount of makeup empties! In January 2012, I had 4 bottles of foundation. I still have those 4 bottles of foundation and I wear foundation every day! None of them are even halfway there!

I started writing down my empties in July. The last makeup item I used up was Prestige My Blackest Lashes mascara (not great). I've since thrown away a dried-up concealer and some ancient eyeliners but that's it! The rest has been skincare.

    1. Wow, you must use a very light hand lol. I still have an embarrassing number of bottles to get through before I buy more... Hmm will steer clear of the Prestige mascara! x

  2. Hmmm...the last makeup item it probably finished was a concealer, I think. I've finished at least a couple of those throughout the year, so it's my best guess. I have a box of empties that need to be photographed so I can get rid of them, and I honestly don't remember what's in it. LOL Good luck with improving your numbers for 2013. I'm hoping to do the same. :-)

  3. I love these posts! That is so interesting that you can look back and see how many products you finished in 2012! That is quite impressive. I started out the year collecting empties (but didn't do any posts) to see how I would do at the end of the year...except I chucked out my box of empties when I moved :( I'll try again for 2013!

    1. Glad you find them interesting! I do find it interesting to keep track of things. Aw it's a shame you had to chuck the box. I find it easier to go through them every month then pop things in the recycling so it doesn't build up too much :) x

  4. I love empties posts too, I don't know what the weird obsession with them is ahha. I think it's probably because of a sense of achievement that you've managed to finish things up and generally I think beauty bloggers have so much! x

    1. I think sometimes we do need a bit of a boost to stop us having the guilt about our collections haha ;) I'm not sure whether to be pleased at the number or concerned that I got so much more than I finished! x

  6. I used up an ancient eyeliner by a company that doesn't even exist any more. My bath/haircare empties list for 2012 is way more impressive.

    1. I never include my bath. hair care empties as I feel like I get through them fine (I'm not one to have 5 bottles of shampoo open at once, I just open 1 at a time). I really need to use up some eyeliners... They last forever don't they! x
